In case you missed it, our own Evan Williams recently drove a bunch of classic Volkswagens from VW’s own collection. If his description of the MK1 GTI has you searching for your own, well here are two options. And each gives you an option to either build your own or buy one built.
Argument: Buy
Article: Supercharged 1984 GTI
Sure the original GTI is a scream to drive; a burbly engine, chatty steering, and a very playful chassis combine to keep you grinning the entire drive. The car is light and tossable, but by modern standards, it’s a bit lacking in power.
What better way to boost performance than by supercharging. This ’84 GTI has a vintage Autotech Magnacharger, upgraded G-grind camshaft, a TechTonics exhaust, and Koni shocks and springs. This is sure to be one really hot hatch.
Have we mentioned the little bunny only has 29,000 miles? Unbelievable. If you want your GTI built, this is the one to get. It’s in Lakewood Ranch, Florida, and is listed on bringatrailer.com. The current bid is an eye-watering $19,000. Bidding ends this Tuesday around 3 pm EST.
Argument: Build
Article: 1984 GTI
Here’s a rough-around-the-edges, but completely serviceable MK1 GTI. The body is straight and rust-free, but we do wonder if it has been repainted since the plastic wheel arches are missing. Repainting isn’t a bad thing, but you can’t help but wonder if there’s some shoddy repairs or Bondo lurking under the silver metallic paint.
One great thing to mention is the motor: there’s a 1.8L 16-valve engine under the hood. While it’s not supercharged like our “Buy” example, it’s sure to be a boatload of fun.
Like any “Build” car, this one has some issues. The seller notes it needs a fuel pump, and the interior is…well worn. But for only $4500, you’re saving yourself $14,500; plenty of cash to add forced induction, right?
Take a look at the ad on thesamba.com; this ’84 GTI is in Laredo, Texas.
