After a hearing on March 25, 2019 in which SEMA testified as its sponsor, legislation AB390 was passed through the California Assembly Committee on Transportation. AB 390’s purpose is to repeal AB 1824 which was passed on January 1 of this year.
California AB 1824 shook the automotive community in the Golden State earlier this year when it proposed to increase the severity of punishment for cars with loud exhaust systems. With a few videos circulating the internet of people getting slapped with $1,000 fines, a little more of a stir was caused, but what people failed to realize is that this was no new law. What changed was how law enforcement handled exhaust violations and “fix-it” tickets no longer being issued. In response, a SEMA-supported repeal, AB 390 was drafted to combat the changes to California’s pre-existing exhaust-noise laws.
According to the SEMA, the next steps for the bill are for it to be accepted by the Committee on Appropriations. To get involved and let your voice be heard by legislators, get involved at the SEMA Action Network and to get caught up on our coverage on this issue, read the stories below!
