Cupra X 2 plan confirms two new models

Cupra's birthday wish is to double its sales, turnover and global network in 2022

Most car brands are so venerable that we’re accustomed to them celebrating birthdays more aligned with the Queen’s Jubilee than a toddler’s cake. But Cupra has only been around as a separate entity for four years, so it probably feels like it needs to make bold statements to make up for its modest candle count. Of course, being small and relatively new makes these assertions easier to frame; if Mercedes claimed it was going to double its sales and turnover in a single year, everyone would wet themselves.

But for Cupra that target is not considered outlandish. “Our 4th anniversary has a special significance. The plans we have in store for 2022 include the intention to double our sales, double our turnover and double our sales network. This is why we’re calling our ambition CUPRA X 2,” said Wayne Griffiths, CEO of Cupra. “Four years ago, many people doubted us, but we never doubted ourselves. This year, we’ll prove once again that nothing can hold back our unstoppable impulse.”

Griffiths’ confidence is likely built on the continuing sales performance of the Formentor – the crossover which accounts for 70 per cent of the firm’s global volume – and on the introduction of the Cupra Born, its first EV. Obviously doubling the size of the dealership network is also intended to pay immediate dividends as the manufacturer seeks to (literally) X 2 the 79,300 cars it sold worldwide in 2021.

If that weren’t enough to be getting on with, Cupra also confirmed that two new electric cars will be added to its lineup in the coming years. The production version of the Tavascan – revealed as a 306hp concept back in 2019 – will come to market in 2024, followed a year later by a model ‘inspired’ by the UrbanRebel that was shown at Munich in September. Both are based on the same MEB platform that underpins the Born and host of other electrified VW Group products, and will be sold alongside the current Leon and Ateca.
