Dacia confirms pricing for first ever hybrid

Seven-seat Jogger gets battery power alongside a petrol engine – for not much money, either

As every single car on the road gets more complex (and more expensive), so the appeal of a Dacia increases. That looks set to continue with its first hybrid; the Jogger 140 doesn’t make any wild performance claims or offer the very latest battery tech, but it does seat seven, return 56mpg, and cost £22k. There aren’t many other cars that can do that, if any.

The Jogger Hybrid pairs a 1.6-litre, 90hp petrol engine with a 1.2kWh battery and pair of electric motors, one providing 50hp and the other serving as the starter-generator we’re used to seeing in mild hybrids. With 140hp in total powering through a ‘multi-mode automatic transmission’, Dacia claims 0-62mph in 10.1 seconds, 112g/km and 56.5mpg.

Perhaps more pertinently, it’s suggested that the battery, despite its small size, can allow the Jogger to spend up to 80 per cent of urban driving time in pure electric mode. Dacia reckons this could save up to 40 per cent of the fuel used by an equivalent petrol car. Regen and engine braking can be increased by a ‘B’ mode for the gearbox, but the Jogger can’t be plugged in.

Some will be disappointed about that, of course, but keeping the battery small means the Jogger Hybrid keeps the same enormous carrying capacity of the standard car. It can still seat seven, and claims up to 1,800 litres of boot space with the middle and rear rows folded. The battery itself is covered by an eight-year/100,000-mile warranty, alongside the standard three-year, 60,000-mile one. It’s all very Dacia.

The Jogger Hybrid will be sold as either an Expression or Extreme SE model. Both get keyless entry, a reversing camera, smartphone mirroring and automatic wipers, with Extreme SE adding heated front seats, 16-inch black alloy wheels and integrated navigation. The only option buyers can add to either is metallic paint. The electrified range kicks off at £22,595, or £23,395 for the Extreme SE, with monthly payments on offer at a ‘shockingly affordable’ £267 with a £2,812 deposit.

Lionel Jaillet, Dacia VP Product Performance, said of the new car: The Jogger Hybrid 140 represents Dacia’s position perfectly – it is the most accessible hybrid family vehicle on the market, offering generous interior space as well as all the essential features. By incorporating this engine, Dacia has taken the leap with hybrid technology.”
