Forum Friday: The .:R32 That's Bursting at the Diamond-Stitched Seams

Ah, the MKV R32. For the second time, Volkswagen stuffed their 3.2-liter VR6 engine into an all-wheel-drive Golf, giving North American buyers a furious little beast. In this era of extracting every last bit of power from direct-injected and turbocharged four-cylinders, it’s a bit nostalgic to look back at this six-cylinder uber-hatch.

VWvortex member mk4vella has been building her R32 since 2015. She purchased the car from another Vortex member who already had done some modifications. She quickly started compiling parts to make her very own show car. Mercedes-Benz Alphard wheels fill the wheel wells and show off the vented and cross-drilled rotors. This mega-hot hatch also has a full air-ride suspension, a Unitronic tune, and a Milltek cat-back exhaust without a resonator. She won second place in the R32 class the first year she took the car to WaterFest.

Two notable upgrades are the color-matched interior rollbar, and the peanut butter quilted leather interior. The gorgeous animal hide (doe leather? As in from a female deer?) covers the seats, the door panels, and even the custom rear cargo panels. She even has matching diamond-stitch leather floor mats (yes, floormats) in black.

The list of modifications is long, but her thread outlining her progress is short: only 6 pages. Which is the perfect amount for a quick Friday read.
