The entry list at the Empire Hill Climb is always wildly diverse — in 2018, it ranged from a cutting-edge Pikes Peak contender to this vintage Porsche 356.
The 2019 Empire Hill Climb presented by Autoweek is on for Sept. 14, and we hope you’ll join us for a day of racing and fun in northern Michigan. We’re big fans of the Climb — we are, after all, the presenting sponsor. But as anyone who has attended the event, which originally ran from 1964-1980 and has been back since 2014, can tell you, it’s a unique day of accessible racing in a beautiful, laid-back setting.
The roughly 3/4-mile, eight-turn EHC course is located just outside the village of Empire’s downtown, which, conveniently enough, serves as the event’s paddock. You’ll be able to get up close to the cars, chat with the drivers and say hello to Autoweek editors (we’ll be there in force). From there, it’s a quick walk to spectator overlooks at turns 3 and 4.
The first cars run up the hill at 10 a.m. Saturday morning, and the event wraps up at 5 p.m.
Last year, Peter Cunningham dominated the hill, posting a 18.539-second time in an Acura TLX GT he’s also run up Pikes Peak. Everything from AMC Gremlins to Nissan 240SXs filled out the rest of the 40-car field of entrants. We’re expecting just as much variety this year; stay tuned for a complete list of cars and drivers.
As always, the Hill Climb is totally free to spectate, and there’s plenty to do both in and around Empire. We’ll be making a weekend out of it. You should too!
