Green Jeepin’: Plug-in hybrid Jeep Renegade, Compass debut with 31 miles of electric-only range

You can’t walk around the floor of the 2019 Geneva motor show without tripping over a battery-powered hypercar (the damn things are so low to the ground!) or stumbling into some high-end EV luxury crossover. But what about electrified vehicles for the rest of us? The nonluxury set who like the idea of EVs, but don’t necessarily always have a spot to plug in?

Jeep, of all makes, has got you covered — if you’re in the European market, at least — with plug-in hybrid versions of the popular Renegade and Compass.

Jeep is light on the technical details, but both the Renegade and the Compass PHEVs are equipped with a 1.3-liter turbocharged inline-four gasoline engine that powers the front wheels. The electric motor is positioned in the rear, which gives the vehicles all-wheel-drive functionality without the weight or complexity of a prop shaft running from front to back. It’s a setup that sounds similar to the one in the Toyota RAV4 hybrid. Total system output for both vehicles is “up to 240 hp”; 0-62 mph takes approximately seven seconds.
