Volkswagen USA took to Twitter yesterday to send out a picture of a wheel and educate you on the facts of sedans. Actually, not you, they were trying to educate people like me, because we keep asking uncomfortable questions about sedans, but more on that later.
The wheel, we presume, is attached to a 2020 Passat since VW went all Dwight Schrute on us and wrote “Fact: In 2018, over 4.25 million sedans were sold in the U.S.” then hashtagged the Detroit auto show, where it plans to unveil the new Passat.
Volkswagen has already shown these wheels on the new Passat, too. When we went down to Arizona to drive the car under cammo, these were the wheels attached to the car, albeit without the VW badge.

We say “new,” but that might be a strong word for what’s on its way. Some new sheet metal will adorn the old NMS platform for 2020 because VW has so much faith in all those sedan sales.
But don’t take too much stock in our snark. Being new isn’t always better and of the many things you can say about the NMS Passat, “fine” is near the top of the list.
Under the hood, you’re also likely to recognize the engine that powers the new Passat. Running on VW’s favorite new cycle, Budack, the turbo-four makes 207 lb-ft of torque, though, which is about 23 more than the outgoing model.
Inside the cockpit, meanwhile, you should get VW’s latest infotainment and safety features, just like in the Jetta. And it should all come at a reasonable price.
Expect full coverage of the Passat early next week from the Detroit Auto Show. And if you’re at all curious about the weight of history that rests on the shoulders of the new Passat, take a look through our two-part history of the mark.
