Here's what Volkswagen's Arteon flagship will cost

The 2019 Volkswagen Arteon finally has an official price. Your four-door, all-wheel-drive sedan with a hatchback and coupe-like roof will set you back $38,640. If you want to ditch the 4Motion setup and go front drive, it’ll cost you $36,840.

The Arteon arrives with four trims (SE, SEL, SEL Premium and R-Line), all featuring a 268-hp and 258-lb-ft turbocharged 2.0-liter I4. An eight-speed automatic is standard, as is Volkswagen’s DCC adaptive damping system and stop/start system.

As for safety, the Arteon has automatic post-collision braking, which stops the car after an initial impact, as well as a pyrotechnic hood, which is not as cool as it sounds. It pops the rear of the hood up a few inches if you hit a pedestrian to pad their landing. All trims also come with forward collision warning, emergency braking and rear traffic alert.

We drove the Euro version back in 2017 and came away impressed.

Breaking down the trims, SE is the base model and comes with “leatherette” heated front, powered seats, keyless access, three-zone climate control, rearview camera and rain-sensing wipers. It also has an 8-inch screen, Bluetooth, two USB ports and eight speakers. The SEL ($40,990) adds LED headlights, panoramic sunroof, leather seats, an upgraded screen with navigation and adaptive cruise control. SEL Premium ($45,940) gets standard 4Motion all-wheel drive, 19-inch wheels, a heated steering wheel, massaging driver’s seat, premium audio and 12 speakers. It also comes with a power trunk and more driver assistance items like lane departure warning, parking steering assistant including park distance control and a surround view camera. Finally, the R-Line adds sporty treatments like the photos you see above. R-Line with 19-inch wheels adds $1,265; the R-Line with 20s is $1,765. All of those prices include $995 in destination fees.

The Volkswagen CC, which this car replaced, was good-looking and well-contented. It just never sold well. We’ll see if the Arteon can turn the tide for a VW flagship. It looks a little sharper, a little sportier and a little more luxurious. And the price seems completely reasonable.

The 2019 Volkwagen Arteon goes on sale in April.
