If you’re a 1993 Cobra purist, you may want to turn away. If you like modified Mustangs, no matter the model, keep reading. In our eyes, Mustangs were built to be driven, they were built to be enjoyed. The men and women from Ford’s Special Vehicle Team (SVT) really meant for their creations to be put through their mechanical paces. We’re not sure if SVT engineers care about date-coded hoses or clamps, or “matching numbers,” but we know for sure the guys over at Hoonigan Racing aren’t concerned with any of that stuff.
What the Hoonigan Racing crew is concerned with are hour-long burnouts, donuts for days, aggressive exhausts, and lots of horsepower. Sure, you could probably accomplish all the above with the existing Cobra engine, albeit with a supercharger and other supporting mods. However, as everyone knows, Hoonigan Racing isn’t about that life so the stock Cobra engine has been pitched in favor of a Ford Performance Aluminator 5.2L XS crate engine pumping out 580 horsepower.
Of course, a Cobra T5 isn’t going to live very long behind an Aluminator, but to add even more exotic flavor to the build, behind the 5.2L XS is a Sadev SCL924 sequential six-speed transmission. The transmission is a prototype at this stage, but you should able to see them in person at this year’s SEMA and PRI. A Power by the Hour front accessory drive will make power steering and A/C a possibility, while everything will be controlled via a Holley Dominator ECU.
Since the Hoonigan’s goal for the car is to be the ultimate street car, and compete in Optima Ultimate Street Car Challenge, the Cobra needed a suspension capable of sending it. To that end, Maximum Motorsports’ finest handling components and systems will be attached to the undercarriage with Ford Performance upgraded brakes at each corner. When the Cobra hits all four, Forgeline wheels will be attached to those brakes.
If the start and direction of this build are any indication, Hoonigan Racing and Ford Performance are well on the way to building one wicked 1993 Cobra. This is one build we will definitely be following. We’re sure you will be, as well.
