Hyundai unveils automatic charging robot arm for its EVs

The ACR is rated as waterproof and dustproof and Hyundai claims it works well in all types of climatic situations

Hyundai Group is working towards making EV charging easier and more convenient. The company recently revealed a robotic charging arm which automatically plugs a cable into the EV’s charging port. Hyundai showcased the robotic arm in action, stating that it can work both indoors and outdoors and help users simplify their EV charging experience.

Dong Jin Hyun, Head of Robotics Lab, Hyundai Motor Group, stated that the ACR (Automatic Charging Robot) works well, especially in dark environments. It also helps improve accessibility, particularly for people with mobility barriers as the cables become thicker and heavier to handle the high-speed charging requirements.

The robotic arm is said to use 3D camera-based AI tech to plug in and pull-out the charging cable from the vehicle’s port. The ACR is rated as waterproof and dustproof and Hyundai claims it works well in all types of climatic situations, be it a storm or a desert.

Hyundai also believes with future automated parking technology, EVs will essentially be able to charge themselves, by driving in, charging and driving out of a parking spot; making it even more convenient for owners.

The Automatic Charging Robot will be showcased by Hyundai at the ongoing 2023 Seoul Mobility Show between March 31 to April 9.
