The next-generation Toyota Supra is coming — really this time. The folks at Toyota plan for the 2020 model to go on sale this summer with only one available engine: a turbocharged 3.0-liter straight-six sourced from BMW. Of course, we learned that wouldn’t be the only engine to make its way under a Supra’s hood across the globe. In certain non-U.S. markets a turbocharged 2.0-liter inline four will move the Supra’s rear wheels.
At least, that’s the official word. However, recent documents from the California Air Resources Board (CARB) might hint otherwise. According to the list you can see below, it looks like BMW — the engine supplier for the inline four, too — had the engine certified by CARB for the Toyota Supra. That is if the “Bayerische Motoren Werke AG” at the top of the page actually means that this entire sheet regards BMW engines.
Naturally, we’ve reached out to the folks at Toyota and got the expected response. About the engine rumor, a spokesperson said: “At this point, Toyota’s plans for the Supra in the U.S. include only the 3.0-liter inline six that will be in the 2020 Supra when it goes on sale this summer.”
It’s safe to assume that the four-cylinder Supra will come eventually, but probably not early on in the new Supra’s life. It’s an even safer bet if these certification papers hold true and the engine is already CARB compliant. If you plan on snagging a new Supra, the U.S. version going on sale this summer will start at $50,920.
