Getting lost (and embarrassed) in a supercar might finally become a thing of the past

We’ve all been there. Given an address, planned a route, allowed lots of time, used a phone app or navigation system to help… then still got lost anyway. And cross. Postcodes and directions are sometimes not quite as good as they need to be, put simply. To address the problem (no pun intended, honest), what3words was created in 2013. You’ve probably heard of the app already, which has divided the world up into 10ft squares to navigate people more precisely, and of some applications in automotive as well. Now there’s a new, fairly significant update, as the Lamborghini Huracan Evo is set to receive what3words as part of its standard equipment.
You’ll remember the Evo facelift introduced Amazon Alexa to the Huracan’s infotainment, a first for Lamborghini; it’s through this software that what3words will be enabled. All that will be required, with the app able to function entirely offline, is a voice command to the relevant three-word address. Lamborghini says that voice is ‘set to be the way we communicate with cars’; anyone who’s fiddled with the new Huracan portrait touchscreen (which requires taking eyes off the road) will be pleased with this development, too.
“The future of mobility demands the most advanced technology, and that is why today Lamborghini is announcing the roll-out of what3words. Our drivers can experience the most seamless way to navigate by voice”, said Luca Giardino, Lamborghini’s Head of Connectivity. The benefits should be substantial; what3words says that not only are its addresses quicker to enter than a full street, but it claims that what3words voice “enables a 135 per cent increase in address recognition.” There’ll be no excuse not to make it to the right beach house, bar, or very specific section of a large open space again.
The technology will make it to Huracans from mid-2022 onwards, so it might be worth holding off an order until then – having what3words onboard sounds like a much more useful add-on than most tech upgrades we can think of. And don’t be at all surprised if the other Lamborghini models (and other manufacturers) swiftly follow suit. Can’t make a grand entrance in a flash car if you’re in the wrong place…
