Land Rover is getting ready to introduce the new Defender, as evidenced by this teaser photo released on Instagram. “Do not unwrap until 2019,” the caption says, hinting the model will arrive in the new year.
Oddly enough, a public relations agency representing Land Rover emailed us an almost identical teaser, and just below the photo it reads “December 27.” We’re not sure exactly what this means, but we’re guessing Land Rover will give us a few more clues about the SUV on this date before a full reveal in 2019. We’ve reached out to Land Rover to clarify the reveal date and will update this post when we hear back.
Expect the new Land Rover Defender to retain the rugged capability of the original model. But it’ll be much more modern, with additional creature comforts and improved safety. It’ll sit on the same aluminum intensive architecture as the new Land Rover Discovery.
And to top it all off, this version will actually make its way to the U.S. It’ll be the first time since 1997, when Land Rover discontinued the SUV in our market. The automaker continued to make the model for other markets until production ended in 2016 after a run of more than 60 years.
