To some, the Mazda CX-3 is too small, but the larger CX-5 is too big: So, off they go to spend their hard-earned crossover bucks at another dealership. Well, at the Geneva motor show, Mazda pulled the sheets back on something that might be just right — the Mazda CX-30. At 173 inches long, the CX-30 bests the CX-3 by 5 inches but is 5 inches shorter than the CX-5: It quite literally splits the difference.
Powering the CX-30 will be essentially the whole swath of Mazda mills: the 2.0-liter Skyactiv-G, the Skyactiv-D 1.8-liter diesel and the Skyactiv-X SCCI engine. Skyactiv-G and -X will come mated with M Hybrid, Mazda's new compact mild hybrid system. A six-speed automatic and a six-speed manual transmission will both be available. Of course, if this car gets slated for the U.S., you’ll likely see the 1.8-liter diesel engine fall by the wayside. Power from those engines will head to the wheels via the latest version of Mazda’s i-Activ all-wheel-drive system.
