Racing aficionados are sure to appreciate McLaren’s ode to its 1995 Le Mans win, which celebrates the victory of the #59 McLaren F1 GTR race car driven by JJ Lehto, Yannick Dalmas, and Masanori Sekiya at the 24-hour race. Everyone else, though, is more likely to admire the handful of F1 GTR-inspired details that finally appear on McLaren’s 720S supercar.
The 720S Le Mans special edition, the latest variant of the British automaker’s 710-hp flagship “Super Series” model, is limited to a mere 50 units for worldwide consumption. A spokesperson for the company’s North American arm confirmed the low-volume model will make its way to our shores. However, exactly how many of the 50 cars land here remains up in the air.
Available exclusively with a coat of orange or gray paint (as well as with either contrasting or complementing orange or gray interior decor), the 720S Le Mans edition stands out from the typical 720S pack thanks to its contrasting dark gray lower body panels (replete with “McLaren 25 anniversary Le Mans” script) and bumpers, carbon fiber fender louvers, and gloss black trim pieces, which includes the roof and its associated scoop. That’s right, this 720S has a functional roof scoop that feeds cool air to its mid-mounted twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V-8 and seven-speed transmission, while also evacuating heat from the engine compartment.
While the roof scoop is awesome, it actually plays second fiddle to the fantastic 720S Le Mans Edition wheels, which emulate the look of the units worn by the Le Mans-winning car from a quarter-century ago. In fact the five-spoke wheels, which cover a set of gold-painted brake calipers, justify the surely hefty price of this low-volume McLaren.
Yes, the exterior styling details of the 720S Le Mans are its most interesting additions. Still, McLaren did not ignore the car’s interior, and the company fit plenty of faux suede throughout the cabin, as well as carbon-fiber racing seats with Le Mans-specific embroidery in the headrests, a marker at the steering wheel rim’s 12 o’clock position, special floor mats, and an interior placard denoting the special nature of the model.
Although McLaren is mum on pricing details for United States-bound 720S Le Mans, the company shared that the 16 cars it’s earmarked for Europe will sticker for £254,500, or approximately $285,000. That said, we expect the model to sell for more than $300,000 when it hits our shores, likely around September—the same time European deliveries begin.
