GT4 racing sounds like a whole lot of fun. It is a relatively new class – new in the pantheon of racing classes – aimed at gentlemen (and lady) racers driving the same kinds of cars that you’d see at your average track day, cars like the M3, Z4, Cayman, S2000 and even Camaro, Mustang and Miata. Any one of those would be a ton of fun towed on a trailer to track days around the country. To that eclectic mix we may now get to add the new Toyota Supra.
That’s “may” add because the 2019 Toyota GR Supra GT4 Concept is, as its name clearly states, just a concept. The car will debut at Geneva next week in full Gazoo Racing livery. Details are a little slim at the moment but Toyota said modifications on the car would include roll cage, suspension, brake(s) and rear wing. Modifications in GT4 are considerably less thorough than those in GT3 and above, but the class does sound like a blast.
“Under Toyota’s global initiative of ‘ever-better-cars,’ TOYOTA GAZOO Racing aims to further enhance customer motorsports by developing an environment where motorsports fans can more readily participate and enjoy race activities,” Toyota said in a statement.
Sounds like a good plan.
The GT4 Concept was developed by Toyota Motorsport GmbH, Toyota’s motorsports entity in Europe, to explore the possibility of using the GR Supra in customer motorsports such as privateer racing.
In addition to the “Supra’s” participation in the NASCAR Xfinity Series, Toyota says the sporty car will take part in the Nurburgring 24 Endurance Race in SP8T in 2019. In 2020, Toyota Supra will also take part in the SUPER GT, GT500 Class in Japan.
Beyond that?
“Moving forward, TOYOTA GAZOO Racing will continue to explore and expand the involvement of the Toyota Supra in motorsports as well as leverage the learning and know-how garnered as it looks to develop ‘ever-better-cars,” read the statement. We’ll interpret that to mean Supras in GT4 in 2020, if not sooner. What do you think?
