NHRA Top Fuel owner-driver Terry McMillen and crew chief Rob Wendland have made steady progress with the Amalie Oil Dragster in the past year or so.
McMillen, of Elkhart, Ind., officially changed his status from underdog to top dog last September at the sport’s marquee-event U.S. Nationals. And during qualifying Saturday for the Magic Dry Arizona Nationals, he cemented his newfound prominence.
He took the provisional No. 1 starting position early in the day with an eye-popping 3.695-second elapsed time at a class-best 330 mph on the 1,000-foot course at Wild Horse Pass Motorsports Park at Chandler, Ariz. Billy Torrence denied him his first top- starting spot later in the afternoon with a 3.667-second, 328.46-mph blast in the Capco Contractors Dragster.
The No. 2 start is McMillen’s career best, and it pits him against surprising No. 15 qualifier Richie Crampton in the DHL Dragster for Kalitta Motorsports.
