About a year back, Ford announced an optional winch package for Ford Super Duty pickups with the Tremor off-road package selected—which, as you might recall, requires selection of one of the two optional upgraded engines: a stout 7.3-liter gas V-8 or a torque-rich 6.7-liter Power Stroke turbodiesel V-8. Twist our arms, Ford. But if you don’t want a Tremor, or have a regular Super Duty that’s model year 2020 or newer, there is now a winch option for you, too.
The winch won’t be cheap. Just like the optional winch on a brand-new Super Duty Tremor, reeling in the 12,000-pound Warn winch will set buyers back $3,000. (UPDATE: A Ford representative told us the winch itself is a combination of several Warn components but based on the 9.5 XP platform. ) It’ll be sold through Ford Performance and available as a factory-ordered or dealer-installed accessory, so perhaps you can do a deal with the dealer for less than MSRP, although labor isn’t included in the price for dealer-installed winches. The winch features lightweight synthetic line and a convenient wireless remote (with a wired remote, too). It’s also a clean install in the center of the lower bumper, with a flush fairlead and even a Ford Performance-branded hook strap.
Speaking of installation, in addition to requiring one of the two upgrade engines for Super Duty pickups, several options are required for installation. If you have a 7.3, the truck requires the factory dual battery option. Power Stroke trucks require the factory 397-amp alternator. F-350 dualies with the 4.10 rear end are also out of luck.
Want one? It’s available to order as a factory option starting April 8.
