Last Wednesday, police began Ops Selamat 15 in conjunction with the Hari Raya Aidilfitri festive period, and as of yesterday, it revealed that there had been 7,012 road accidents involving 10,042 vehicles reported nationwide during the first four days of the road safety operation, Bernama reports.
According to police corporate communications head Datuk Asmawati Ahmad, Selangor recorded the highest number of accidents, namely 2,154 cases, followed by Johor (1,068 cases), Kuala Lumpur (989 cases) and Penang (616 cases), and there were 69 fatalities.
As with previous Ops Selamat outings, the operation – which will run until June 12 – will focus on six major offences, namely driving in the emergency lane, speeding, overtaking on a double line, using a mobile phone while driving, jumping the queue and not obeying traffic lights.
Like it was with Ops Selamat 14 earlier this year, motorists stopped by the police for any of these traffic offences during the period will be issued with the maximum RM300 fine, according to The Star.
“If a summons is issued for any of these offences, no discounts will be given. This is one of our ways to educate the public to be more responsible while on the roads. The most important thing is to arrive at your destination safely,” Kuala Lumpur traffic investigation and enforcement department chief Assistant Commissioner Zulkefly Yahya said.
