Petronas today extended the Kempen Beli Barangan Malaysia, introduced by the ministry of domestic trade and consumer affairs, to over 700 of its Kedai Mesra nationwide.
Through the campaign, Petronas will jointly promote a range of locally produced F&B offerings at Kedai Mesra including kerepek, cakes, juice as well as local staples such as nasi lemak and fried noodles. Petronas will also be having a customised shelf at 100 selected stations to highlight products by Malaysian small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).
“We are pleased to have the support from Petronas to offer an opportunity to our SMEs to market their locally made products while creating greater awareness for this campaign. Ultimately, we want to stimulate domestic economic growth through increasing the purchase of local goods. This would also help grow local entrepreneurs’ business, especially in this highly competitive marketplace,” said Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution, the minister of domestic trade and consumer affairs.
Promoting SME products isn’t something new to Petronas. The campaign is in line with its SME programme that was established over 25 years ago to support local businesses. To date, Petronas has over 350 local vendors supplying its Kedai Mesra stores.
At this morning’s launch event at Petronas Jalan Kolam Air Lama, the company showcased six local vendors and their products – kerepek by Akuku Food Industry and Perniagaan Hadeen Enterprise, FG Walet Bird’s Nest by Zhafou Trading, chocolate moist cake by Anis Food, sauces by Mama G Marketing and popsicles made from fresh fruits by Doluvo. Also brought in were Nasi Lemak Saleha, kuih by Sri Talamaz, sandwiches and lunch boxes by Mas Awana and fried noodles by Nora Delights.
“As a national oil company, we are always supportive of promoting local businesses and strengthening the domestic economy. Under our SME programme, we have helped many local vendors to penetrate their products to a wider market through our network of stations. Some of these vendors already have market presence at more than 400 of our Mesra stores nationwide,” said Petronas Dagangan Berhad MD and CEO Datuk Seri Syed Zainal Abidin Syed Mohd Tahir.
“With the campaign now fast gaining traction and more corporations joining the bandwagon, we believe we will be able to combine our strengths to elevate the local business scene,” he added. The ex-Proton boss also said that Petronas has helped SMEs in strategy and marketing as some of the companies have capacity, but not experience. They are also working with MARA to unearth SMEs to assist.
