The Porsche 911 GT2 RS is the pinnacle of the outgoing generation of Porsche 911s and had effectively completed its production run this past February. But it looks like the folks in the Porsche factory will have to dust off the equipment used for the GT2 RS after four of these high-end Porsches were lost at sea.
The 911 GT RS models lost were part of the fire on the Grande America, along with over 30 other Porsche models and around 2,000 other cars — the majority reportedly wearing Audi badges. The Grande America eventually capsized and sank after the fire, with the crew reportedly evacuating safely.
#GrandeAmerica Italian cargo ship sank about 330 kilometres off the western Atlantic coast of France…. and 2200 tons of fuel expected to land on our beautiful coasts. Poor planet earth. #pollution pic.twitter.com/y8a7Hii3PS
With the cars lost at sea, the Brazilian customers that ordered these $300,000 supercars might have been left high and dry — but Porsche will restart production to honor the orders. As for the other 2,000 cars — well, those are all still likely in production, so the customers shouldn’t have too many problems getting a replacement.
Production of the 700-hp, Nurburgring record-smashing Porsche 911 GT2 RS will start again in April. The Grande America’s fire comes shortly after another shipping accident that resulted in the loss of 3,500 Nissans. Hopefully, the replacement 911 GT2 RS models will have a safer journey across the ocean and make it to their respective owners.
