While it’s not yet Spring in North America, we’ve been all about sun and sand this week. By now you’ve probably seen Volkswagen’s new I.D. BUGGY electric concept, our recent Model Rewind: Dune Buggy, and our Find Of The Day, a 16-valve powered Meyers Manx. Well if you’re looking for your own beach mobile, here’s this week’s Ratty Rescue – a genuine Meyers Manx dune buggy.
Don’t know much about dune buggies? They’re a simple machine: take an old VW Beetle, remove the body, cut 14 inches from the chassis, weld it back up, then bolt on the fiberglass body. Well, it’s a little more than that, but the lightweight chassis, engine, and new body make the perfect vehicle for scrambling over sand dunes and up and down the shore. Dune buggies were DIY affairs, allowing shade-tree mechanics to build their own unique car. And the most desirable ones are Meyers Manxes.
Authenticated by Bruce Meyers, this Manx comes with a 1970 VW title. Don’t let the rough condition of the body fool you: there’s been a serious amount of work done on this car. The aircooled flat-four engine has a ton of upgrades: larger heads, pistons, and cylinders, improved oil cooling, and dual Kadron carbs.
The basis of any buggy is the chassis. This one was sandblasted, primed, and painted. The seller has even built a 1.5″ body lift. Take a look at the photos and you’ll see that the mechanicals are complete.
You’ll need to clean up the fiberglass body before painting. And the buggy will need a windshield and dash (both are available from Meyers Manx). But the rest of the parts are all there; brand-new looking wheels, Mazda Miata seats (with speakers in the headrests), gauges, lights, and much more. The seller is including old Hot VW’s magazines, toys, and literature too.
This Meyers Manx is a no-reserve auction on eBay, and the bid as of this writing is $3500. The car is in Santa Barbara, California. If you’re dreaming of cruising to the beach on a warm summer day, bid now and you could probably get this buggy on the road by summer.
