In another sign of the times, Motor1 is reporting that standard versions of the next Volkswagen Golf will not be sold in the United States. Before you start smashing things, note that the near-perfect Golf GTI and high-strung, all-wheel-drive Golf R will still be sold, at this point. We’re also losing the SportWagen, which was about the cheapest way to station wagon, if you’re into such things.
As sad as we’ll be to see the standard Golf leave us, the GTI and Golf R made up almost half of Golf total sales, so we’ll still see plenty on the road. And with the news that the next GTI might be pushing 300 hp, we’d like to see as many as possible.
Volkswagen declined to comment further, FYI.
The higher-riding Golf Alltrack, based on the SportWagen, is probably in jeopardy too. The e-Golf is gone too, but that will be absorbed in the company's all-electric I.D. brand.
The eighth-gen Golf is expected to arrive later this year, but we’ll know for sure whether we’re getting a base Golf before then. Stay tuned.
