“Restore Bonneville” Project Funds Approved Pending Federal Funding. #savethesalt

The Utah state government has approved $5 million to be allocated for the restoration of the birth place of speed, The Bonneville Salt Flats. This is a huge step toward obtaining federal funds which will kickstart a decade-long revitalization project: pumping 1.5 million tons/per year of salt back on to the flats. This progress is thanks to the efforts put forth by the steadfast racing community and enthusiasts alike by writing letters to Utah legislators.

However, this $5 million dollars from the state of Utah will only be released if funds totaling $45 million are committed from the federal government and other donors from the motorsport community. Save the Salt representative and long-time Bonneville racer Louise Ann Noeth told us, “Save the Salt will also donate what it can, but money needs to come from the feds first.”

Along with SEMA members, Louise has been at the forefront of this campaign to restore Bonneville for years and is instrumental in spreading the word. She’s traveled the country to the biggest racing events to bend the ears of the likes of Roger Penske, George Poteet, and president of Indianapolis Motor Speedway, Doug Boles. “There were probably 700 to 1,000 letters sent to Utah legislators by the racing community, with about 145 from SEMA, and 415 from AMA (American Motorcycle Association).
