As part of its upcoming Contemporary Art Evening, RM Sotheby’s will be auctioning off three Alfa Romeo B.A.T. Concepts in a single lot for the very first time, a listing expected to fetch up to $20 million USD.
Originally designed by legendary automotive designer Franco Scaglione, the cars were built from 1953 to 1955 by Carrozzeria Bertone as testaments to the generation’s forward-thinking aerodynamics and coachbuilding advancements. The trio was sold off individually after their respective show circuit runs, and weren’t reunited until 1989, where the three classics were displayed together during the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance. All three were then acquired by the current owner, who has restored and maintained them as a group ever since, showing them off at various public events over the past three decades.
“To be able to offer the Alfa Romeo B.A.T cars as a single lot triptych at auction is a once-in-a-generation opportunity,” says Rob Myers, Chairman of RM Sotheby’s. “To do so in Sotheby’s Contemporary Art evening sale only adds further validation to the global significance of the B.A.T cars. These three truly spectacular cars are amongst the most instantly recognizable and important pieces of automotive design ever produced. Furthermore, they have never been offered for sale as a united trio, and so the offering of this design triptych may never happen again. The importance of the offering of these cars cannot be underestimated either within the automotive or within the art, sculpture and design world.”
