According to a media report, the Maruti Suzuki Alto 800 is likely to be discontinued in 2019. Maruti reportedly has no plans to update the Alto 800 to meet the new emissions and safety norms and is therefore expected to go out of production in Q3 2019.
The Alto 800 was launched in 2012 as a replacement for the Maruti 800. Incorporating crash structures into an A-segment model limited to a length of 3.6 meters is difficult. Also, the 796cc, 3-cylinder petrol engine cannot be upgraded to meet BS-VI emission norms.
Earlier this year, there were reports of the Omni being discontinued for the same reasons. However, the Maruti Eeco is being updated to comply with BS-VI emission regulations as well as the upcoming Bharat New Vehicle Safety Assessment Program (BNVSAP) in order to maintain a presence in the van segment.
