Rumour: Maruti to phase out all diesel cars from April 2020

According to reports, Maruti Suzuki is planning to phase out all diesel cars from April 1, 2020 when BS-VI emission norms are scheduled to be introduced. This is despite the fact that 23% of its total sales come from diesel cars. The carmaker is expected to push buyers to shift to petrol or CNG cars by offering incentives, while more models are likely to get CNG options.

Maruti Suzuki offers diesel engine options in the Dzire, Swift, Baleno, Ciaz, Ertiga and S-Cross models. The Dzire, Swift, Baleno and S-Cross are powered by a Fiat-sourced 1.3-litre, 4-cylinder diesel unit, while the Ciaz and Ertiga come with a new 1.5-litre, 4-cylinder diesel engine that makes 94 BHP and 225 Nm of torque. The company has stated that if there is a demand for diesel vehicles after BS-VI norms are introduced, it may consider developing a compliant 1,500cc diesel engine.

Maruti Suzuki has also started updating its petrol cars with BS-VI compliant engines. The company has launched a new 1.2-litre DualJet petrol engine with mild-hybrid technology in the Baleno, while the new Alto is now available with a BS-VI compliant 796cc, 3-cylinder petrol unit that puts out 47 BHP and 69 Nm of torque.
