Take the Petersen Museum Virtual Vault Tour

The Petersen Automotive Museum is opening up its legendary vault, at least on video, during this coronavirus pandemic. Tony Miller, one of the caretakers of the massive collection, walks us through customs and hot rods in this latest video. It’s one of several that will be broadcast over the next few months.

Miller starts by telling us the difference between typical hot rods and customs. “Hot rods are usually early, prewar cars that were modified in the interest of performance. Customs are usually later cars modified to enhance their appearance.”

We first see a Bosley Interstate prototype, followed by a custom Cadillac bodied by Italian coachbuilder Ghia. We then move on to a custom Chevy El Camino built by notable designer Harry Bentley Bradley, who did both Hot Wheels toys and real customs with the Alexander Brothers.

Later we move into Grand National Roadster Show territory, where the Petersen owns 11 of the America’s Most Beautiful Roadster, or AMBR, winners, including two orange hot rods that were built by Ermie Immerso. Immerso is the only designer to win the AMBR three times over.

This video, like the AMMO NYC detailing clip, is worth watching just for the cars in the background. We’ll be looking for more vault videos from the Petersen Museum soon, and we’re looking forward to getting back to the Petersen in person.
