The All-New 2020 Ford Escape Has a Huge Rear Badge

Ford introduced the latest-generation Escape for the 2013 model year, so the compact crossover is a bit overdue for a full redesign. Fortunately, the automaker promises to unveil the new version we covered a few weeks back (our artist’s illustration is above) on April 2.

On Twitter, Ford released a teaser video to whet our appetites. We can see the crossover gets a completely redesigned grille, which looks less hexagonal than the current model’s. In the rear, there are new taillights and large “Escape” lettering that spans the liftgate.

The current Escape (as seen in the gallery below) is Ford’s second-bestselling vehicle in the U.S., bowing only to the almighty F-series. So needless to say, there’s a lot riding on its success. Last year, Ford sold 272,228 copies of the Escape, down 11.7 percent from the prior year, but it was still enough to beat the Explorer‘s 227,732 total.

The 2020 Ford Escape will sit on a new front-wheel-drive platform shared with the Lincoln Corsair small crossover, which itself will debut on April 17. The architecture also sits under the new-generations (and not-for-U.S.) Ford Focus, and will also be used on the next-generation EcoSport and a new small crossover inspired by the Bronco SUV. Ford hasn’t announced powertrain options for the new Escape, but we know a hybrid version is coming.
