The UK will curb excessive exhaust noise with noise cameras

Following the recent trend of punishing excessively loud cars, the folks across the pond in the UK’s Department for Transport will be rolling out a trial for noise cameras. The idea of a noise camera does sound, well, dumb, but it’s basically a decibel meter that’s attached to a camera that will capture the license plate of the loud car. Obviously, from there, the owner of the car will receive a citation decreeing their car too loud for public roads and will have to atone for their crimes by likely paying some sort of fine.

According to UK.gov, “the trial is not intended to target law-abiding drivers, but those who are flouting laws around noise. All vehicles must legally meet strict noise limits before they are allowed on the road. Once a vehicle is in service, exhausts and silencers must by law be maintained in good working order and not altered to increase noise.”

This stricter noise enforcement follows California’s recent exhaust crackdown. With more cities, states and countries enforcing excessive exhaust noise, it might be a bad time for those running unrestricted exhaust as you can hear in the video above.

The current limit on exhaust noise in the UK is 74 decibels, which is respectably loud but significantly quieter than most states in the U.S. allow. It seems likely that the U.K. will generate a good amount of revenue from these cameras and turn this trial into a widespread operation, but we’ll have to wait and see.
