Criminals of south-east Australia beware: if you’re trying to outrun what looks to be an ordinary BMW 5-series with its blues and twos going, it might actually be something rather more potent.
Alongside its fleet of 530d 5ers, Victoria Police now has an M5 Competition at its disposal. With a 0-62mph time of 3.3 seconds and a top speed of 190mph, the twin-turbo V8 super saloon is now surely Australia’s fastest police car.
An M5 is not exactly the cheapest choice for a patrol car, but before any local taxpayers start frothing at the mouth and going into an outrage meltdown on Twitter, it’s worth pointing out that the M5 Comp is on loan to the authorities from BMW Australia. It’ll briskly protect and serve for 12 months before being returned.
Speaking about the rapid new police vehicle, BMW Group Australia CEO Vikram Pawah said:
“Our 530ds have impressed the force with their combination of performance, comfort, dynamics and efficiency…Now with the incredible BMW M5 Competition entering Victoria Police service, the performance level has jumped up the scale. When combined with the safety of the xDrive four-wheel drive system, the M5’s all-round ability aspects makes it a natural fit for dynamic police duties.”
The key takeaway from this is that the M5 won’t – unlike many ultra high-performance police cars – be just used for publicity purposes. It sounds as though it will indeed see proper service. Victoria-based crooks might as well just give up now…
