The death knell appears inescapable – so will there be a special place in heaven for DERV drinkers
It seems not even a resurgence in new car sales can save diesel, because last month, when sales for petrol and electrified cars rose Britain, oil burners continued to suffer dwindling demand. Ongoing pressure from regulators and manufacturers keen to drop DERVs from their line-ups seem to have set the fuel type on a path of no escaping. Which, as many of us will agree, is a shame.
But it also sparks a question: could diesels one day become rare, desirable collectables? Certainly, there are plenty of great diesel-fed cars out there with engines worthy of celebration. Could we one day long for a car equipped with Mercedes’s bulletproof five-cylinder OM602, or crave the ridiculous muscle of a V12 TDI Audi like the Q7, a PH Hero, no less. And what of the daily hero of them all, the BMW 335d, and its 3.0 twin-turbo straight-six?
