BS-IV vehicles already entered in Vahan 4 having a purchase date up to March 31, 2020 for which tax and fees have not been paid will be eligible for verification, approval and the subsequent process by the concerned authorities.
The transport department of the Government of Tamil Nadu has obtained a court order that allows registration of BS-IV vehicles sold till March 31, 2020.
According to the court order, BS-IV vehicles already entered in Vahan 4 having a purchase date up to March 31, 2020 for which tax and fees have not been paid will be eligible for verification, approval and the subsequent process by the concerned authorities.
The order also states that BS-IV vehicles for which temporary registration has been done in Vahan 1, may be updated in Vahan 4 and allowed for a permanent registration process.
The Supreme Court of India had banned the sale of BS-IV cars in the country from March 31, 2020. However, with the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic and the lockdown imposed to control it, the court had allowed retailers to sell 10% of the unsold BS-IV inventory for a certain number of days after the nationwide lockdown was called off. The court had also said that all vehicles which were sold but not registered will be allowed to be registered for a certain number of days after the lockdown ended.
However, the court observed that dealerships had violated its directives and sold BS-IV vehicles during the lockdown and recalled its order, which allowed the sale of BS-IV vehicles for 10 days after the lockdown was lifted. It then went on to ban the registration of BS-IV vehicles sold during the lockdown. In August 2020, the Supreme Court allowed the registration of BS-IV vehicles that were sold in March 2020, before the lockdown was announced.
