After pulling the plug on the hotly anticipated original May 2020 debut of its next installment, the ninth entry in the Fast and Furious franchise is finally around the corner. Set to hit theaters this June, the upcoming F9: Fast & Furious 9 dropped a new trailer that shows the broad strokes of the plot. More importantly, the trailer shows that the Fast saga seems to have become self-aware.
The first trailer revealed the massive plot twist that Han Lue has rejoined the gang of supercar-driving superheroes. Devoted fans of the franchise know that Lue, played by Sung Kang, was assumed to die in an explosion in Fast and Furious: Tokyo Drift and was buried in Furious 7. This might be a massive plot point, but it doesn’t seem like the craziest thing we’ll see in the upcoming film.
Almost as wacky as Lue’s immortality is the trailer’s revelation of Dominic Toretto’s brother’s existence. The younger Toretto, played by wrestling superstar John Cena, will play a major role in the plot while he tries to enact revenge on Toretto and the gang. This will lead to the incredible high jinks fans have become accustomed to in more recent films.
This latest installment does sound ridiculous, but the character Roman Pearce, played by Tyrese Gibson, outlines many of the absurd challenges the group has faced over their tenure as vigilante crime fighters. This latest jump to becoming self-aware as a franchise could add a layer of tongue-in-cheek comedy that might appeal to an even broader audience.
Of course, we won’t know for sure until we see all of F9: Fast and Furious 9 when it drops on June 25. Until then, we’ll just have to keep watching this trailer on a loop.
