Cadillac brought camouflaged CT4-V and CT5-V prototypes to the Detroit Grand Prix for s surprise lap of the circuit. As for specs, we don’t have anything to go on except for the promise that these cars represent “the next step in Cadillac’s V-Series performance legacy,” but we hope the dazzle wraps conceal a good dose of extra power.

Just last week, Cadillac unveiled two new V-Series cars: The CT4-V and CT5-V sedans. Despite features like launch control and limited slip differentials, maybe the biggest question readers (and AW staffers) had after the reveal was: Where are the V8s?
We still don’t have a firm answer to that one; sorry. But Cadillac says there’s more in store for its performance-oriented V-Series cars, and to prove it, it busted out two camouflaged CT4- and CT5-based prototypes for a surprise lap around the Detroit Grand Prix circuit. They were driven around the track by GM president Mark Reuss and GM VP of global product Ken Morris.
We’re not sure what to call these just yet. If they really do sit above the newly revealed V-cars in terms of performance, why not use the V-Sport badge do describe sporty, but less-powerful cars? Will these be dubbed V-Plus? V-Extreme? V-Maximal? Hopefully it will all make sense once the dust settles.
To recap, the 2020 CT5-V gets a 355 hp, 400 lb-ft twin-turbocharged V6, while the CT4-V gets a 320 hp, 369 lb-ft 2.7-liter turbo-four. What’s powering these prototypes remains to be seen, but a logical step up — in our occasionally logical mind, at least — would be to cram the V6 TT into the CT4 and then bequeath the CT5 the Blackwing V8. Or, heck, cram the V8 into both cars, assuming it fits.
That said, a quick tailpipe check still shows two pairs of twin exhaust tips at the rear of each of the cars. So that much remains the same, at least for now.
What differences can we glean from the track shots? Dazzle camo makes it tough to see just what changes are forthcoming, but the front appears to give more area over to big grilles and there are large lip-type spoilers on the rear decklids. Further, both cars sport side ducts just behind the front wheels, presumably to aid with airflow at high speeds but also — let’s be honest — to look cool.
Cadillac offered no information on these cars beyond suggestion that they represent “the next step in Cadillac’s V-Series performance legacy.” For the moment, that, along with these photos, are all we have to go on. Stay tuned for more.
