Volkswagen could confirm the ID.4 for India in May 2023

The Volkswagen ID.4 GTX comes with a 77 kWh battery that is said to offer 480 km of range on a single charge.

The Volkswagen ID.4 has been testing in India for quite some time, but we haven’t heard anything specific about its launch date yet. According to media reports, the electric SUV could be greenlit by VW HQ by May 2023.

Ashish Gupta, Brand Director, Volkswagen India, stated that the launch of the ID.4 in India “is a matter of when and not if”. He added that the ID.4 is available globally and that testing and validation for EVs takes time.

Given the hot and humid weather and rough road conditions in India, the platform has to undergo extensive testing. The car’s suspension has to be fined tuned to suit our roads. Gupta also added that it takes time to assemble the parts and packages for CKD kits that are exported to other markets.

The new battery safety norms are also said to be one of the reasons for the delay. The regulations were introduced in two phases and require automakers to test each cell, battery management system and onboard chargers.

Volkswagen has been evaluating the ID.4 for India since 2020. Globally, the ID.4 is offered with a range of powertrains including single-motor rear-wheel drive and dual-motor all-wheel drive configurations. The GTX variant packs 299 BHP and is powered by a 77 kWh battery pack. VW claims it can cover up to 480 km on a single charge.
