The Volkswagen e-Golf – the automaker’s “ambassador for e-mobility” – is one of the most successful EVs in Europe by sales volume.
At Volkswagen’s Gläserne Manufaktur – or “Glass Factory” – in Dresden, the automaker delivered its 100,000th VW e-Golf to a customer just earlier this month, providing some validation for the company’s decision to focus increasingly on electric vehicles over the coming years. The VW e-Golf is only the brand’s second volume production battery electric vehicle after the e-Up!, yet since its 2014 introduction, it’s gone on to become one of the most commercially successful EVs in Europe.
The e-Golf is driven by a 134-horsepower electric motor powering the front wheels through a single-speed gear reducer, with a 35.8-kWh lithium-ion battery pack providing up to 125 miles of range per charge, according to U.S. EPA estimates. The 100,000th example delivered this month is shod in “Pure White”, which is a fitting color for an anniversary car.
“The e-Golf has already been our ambassador for e-mobility for more than five years,” says VW’s Head of Sales and Marketing in Germany, Holger B. Santel. “Today’s delivery milestone of 100,000 vehicles is confirmation of the e-Golf’s success in fulfilling its mission. It, therefore, plays an important role in the mobility turnaround for many customers and paves the way for the new ID.3.”
Volkswagen has earmarked billions of dollars for investment into electric vehicles over the coming years, with the ultimate goal of dominating in the EV segment. The German automaker has set a target of selling a million EVs per year worldwide between 2025 and 2030, with about half of those sales coming from China alone.
The Gläserne Manufaktur in Dresden, where the 100,000th VW e-Golf was delivered to its new owner, will start producing the VW ID.3 battery-electric vehicle from fall, 2020. The brand-new model is already in production at another Volkswagen facility in Zwickau.
“The e-Golf has made the Gläserne Manufaktur a vibrant showcase for e-mobility since 2017,” says the Glass Factory’s Head of Sales and Marketing, Henning Schulzki. “We will produce over 16,000 units this year – an all-time high. We are delighted to have set this new record.”
