The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has directed Volkswagen to pay a fine of Rs. 100 crore to the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) for using a ‘cheat device’ during emission tests of its diesel vehicles.
The NGT has formed a committee comprising of officials from the Ministry of Environment and Forests, Ministry of Heavy Industries, CPCB and the Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI) to assess the environmental impact of these vehicles. The committee is expected to submit its report within a month.
Volkswagen was found to be using a special software in its diesel vehicles to manipulate emission tests globally. The car maker has already accrued millions in fines, while some of its top officials have been sentenced for their involvement in the emissions scandal.
In India, Volkswagen had earlier submitted a plan to recall over 3.23 lakh vehicles that are said to be fitted with the ‘cheat device’.
