Good news for electric Volkswagen shoppers in Canada, with a new free fast-charging arrangement for buyers picking up a 2020 e-Golf north of the border.
Unsurprisingly, the deal for free charging is through Electrify Canada. That’s the charging network company that’s a partnership between Electrify America, itself a subsidiary of VW Group of America, and Volkswagen Group Canada.
The deal announced today would give drivers of 2020 VW e-Golfs two years of complimentary 30-minute charge sessions, which gives Canadians just about enough time to drink their double double and eat a Boston Cream donut, or about enough for two full passes with the Zamboni. “Our goal is to make EV adoption accessible to every driver and we are excited to be expanding our relationship with Volkswagen Canada,” said Robert Barrosa, chief operating officer of Electrify Canada. “Electrify Canada’s charging stations are designed to help EV drivers get to where they want to go – both with the speed of which they charge and strategic locations in convenient areas. This new charging plan serves as extra incentive for drivers to make the switch to electric.”
Electrify Canada is opening up a network of 150 to 350 kW chargers across much of Canada, with more than 128 chargers set to open in Ontario, Quebec, Alberta, and British Columbia by the end of the year. Currently, just three sites are open, all near the Greater Toronto Area. Electrify Canada normally charges $0.27/min for charging up to 75 kW with a $0.40/min idle fee.
