Another NHRA Funny Car event, another harrowing run for driver Alexis DeJoria.
This time, the veteran race was shaken up in a massive car fire at the AAA NHRA Texas FallNationals at Ennis, Texas, near Dallas on Sunday.
DeJoria’s ROKiT/ABK Beer Toyota Camry caught fire just as it crossed the finish line after she outran Gary Densham in the first round of Sunday’s eliminations. DeJoria was shaken up but returned for the quarterfinal round, where she was ousted by Ron Capps.
“That was crazy,” DeJoria said. “I saw sparks, and and then all of the sudden, whoosh. The whole cockpit filled up with smooke.”

DeJoria, 43, is back in the NHRA this season after a three-year “retirement” from the sport. She’s currently eighth in the NHRA Camping World Drag Racing Series points standings.
Sunday’s incident came just two weeks after the the body of her Camry exploded during the Midwest Nationals at World Wide Technology Raceway near St. Louis.
