The late Sir Stirling Moss may have been uncrowned in Formula 1, but he did win “the greatest race,” aka the Mille Miglia 1000 in 1955 with an average speed of 98.5 mph with co-driver Denis Jenkinson. In this Petrolicious video from 2015, Moss brings us through the race in his own words.
“Oh, I’m certain it’s my greatest win,” said Moss. “I can’t think of any other car in the world that would have given me the opportunity to achieve the speeds we did.”
Moss and Jenkinson used a straight-eight, 310-hp Mercedes-Benz 300 SLR for the feat.
“It was a race that frightened me, it really did,” said Moss, “because I knew how fast I had to go and how little I knew about where I was going.”
Check out the video with commentary from racing great Brian Redman and a bunch of others famous folks. The original Mille Miglia ran from 1927 to 1957. It came back in 1977 as the Mille Miglia Storica, where the only cars allowed to enter are from the original era.
