Ex-F1 driver, Stoffel Vandoorne, has said he would choose being on the podium in Formula E rather than a top-10 finish in Formula 1.
Vandoorne, alongside another driver with previous connections to McLaren in Nyck de Vries, has started a brand new chapter of his racing career by racing for the Mercedes Formula E team.
As he patiently waits to get racing again, Vandoorne answered questions from fans and was asked which achievement he would prefer to have in the two motorsport classes.
“A podium in Formula E would give me more satisfaction at the moment,” Vandoorne said in a Facebook Q and A session with Sporza.
“Don’t get me wrong, I’d really like to be in the top ten in Formula 1 which is a great achievement, but it depends so much on the team you drive for. If you are fifth in a Mercedes, you can’t be satisfied.
“But in Formula E you know that, even with not quite as good equipment, you can be in the top five with the perfect race.”
Vandoorne has been off the Formula 1 grid since the end of 2018 after two full difficult seasons with McLaren and, while he thinks his Formula 1 days could well be over, he would be tempted to make a return.
“Formula 1 is a world where there are almost no second chances,” Vandoorne added.
“I may have been in the right place at the worst time, but if an opportunity arises and the demand comes up again then I will definitely look at that offer.”
