Antonio Giovinazzi: 'Bad luck follows me'

Alfa Romeo’s Antonio Giovinazzi believes bad luck follows him after his engine failure during Q1 at the Belgian GP.

The team have shown strong pace throughout the weekend and Giovinazzi’s team-mate Kimi Raikkonen used it to full effect and will start P6 for Sunday’s race.

Giovinazzi had hoped for a similar result, but it seems he just can’t shake off the Saturday curse in his first full season of Formula 1 – his engine failure with under a minute to go in Q1 even ruined Carlos Sainz’s flying lap and the red flags caused him to be eliminated in Q1.

“Honestly I do not know what I need to do, bad luck follows me,” he told reporters in Spa.

“The pace was really good until that moment, also I know now Kimi [Raikkonen] is P6.

“We did a new upgrade, we are working really well, but unfortunately that happened today.

“Tomorrow will be another day, maybe colder and some rain, so fingers crossed for a good race tomorrow.”

Raikkonen, a four-time winner in Spa, was happy with his qualifying performance, but said that his pace didn’t come as a surprise.

“No not really, it has not been bad in previous races,” he said when asked if the C38 had performed beyond his expectations.

“Obviously it’s a different layout [at the Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps] so we started a little slower but it only really improved.

“We changed the car a little for qualifying and I think if we can put everything right in one lap we can be really fast as you saw in Q2, but it was difficult we had one set of tyres in the last qualifying and it was hard to make the tyres work from Turn 1 until the last corner.

“It could have been a better result but I think it doesn’t matter because we are still going to start P6 tomorrow.
