Antonio Giovinazzi: ‘Not easy’ to race with Alfa Romeo future uncertain

Antonio Giovinazzi says not knowing what 2022 holds for him complicates his racing, as it would for any driver.

Entering the closing stages of his third season with Alfa Romeo, Giovinazzi’s seat is the final one for the 2022 grid yet to be finalised.

With Michael Andretti apparently interested in buying a majority stake in the team, Colton Herta has now joined Guanyu Zhou, Oscar Piastri and Theo Pourchaire in being linked to the team.

And Giovinazzi is not about to pretend this uncertainty is not having an effect.

“For sure, it’s not easy. If you ask this question to all of the drivers, they will answer that it’s not easy. You want to know what you will do next year, if you’re here or not,” he told reporters at the United States Grand Prix.

But while the contenders are new this time around, Giovinazzi admitted that by this stage of his career he is accustomed to not having job security from one season to the next.

“It’s not ideal, but the situation is this now for me, and I will try to do my best as well with this pressure on me,” he said.

“But like I mentioned already many times, for me, September, October, it’s been always like this, I always had some issues with what I will do the next season, and this is happening also this year.

“The problem is not in my hands, so it’s not my decision. What I can do is just bring the results, be fast and then see what [Alfa Romeo] will decide.”

Giovinazzi seemingly did not help his cause at the Turkish Grand Prix when he ignored Alfa Romeo’s orders to let his team-mate Kimi Raikkonen through.

The team did say though that there was no ill-feeling lingering, which Giovinazzi backs up.

“I think it’s an issue that sometimes comes, and it came already in the past. But I don’t like, to be honest, to comment on this here, I just like to discuss this with the team, inside of the team,” said Giovinazzi.

“But it’s not the first time and the important thing is we are okay now, all fine.

“I believe in my team, they believe in me, so the only thing that is [important] now is that we score points. This is what we want, all of us.”
