Birthday boy and NHRA legend John Force comes up short of win 150

Seventy-year-old Funny Car racer John Force made a wish and blew out his birthday candles the day before eliminations at the Arby’s NHRA Southern Nationals at Atlanta.

But his wish for his 150th overall victory didn’t come true Sunday. Force beat Jack Beckman in the opening round, but eventual winner Ron Capps defeated him in the quarterfinals on the Atlanta Dragway 1,000-foot course.

Capps, who won for the first time since last October at Charlotte, shared the winners circle Sunday with Steve Torrence (Top Fuel) and Andrew Hines (Pro Stock Motorcycle).

Force, driver of the PEAK BlueDEF Chevy Camaro, has 16 championships as a driver and four more as a team owner (with Robert Hight and Tony Pedregon in Funny Car and Brittany Force in Top Fuel). But he hasn’t won since last July at the Dodge Mile-High Nationals at Denver.

Exactly 132 of Force’s 149 victories came with former crew chief Austin Coil, who called Force for a pep talk recently.
