With one final chance to test the F1 cars in pure qualifying trim, Carlos Sainz reckons F1 could be in for a feast of “fast” times on Friday.
After six days of lapping the Circuit de Catalunya, the Formula 1 teams will bid farewell to Spain on Friday evening.
Friday marks the sixth and final day of testing so the next time the cars are driven in anger will be the Friday of the Australian Grand Prix.
To date only one driver has broken into the 1:15s in testing with Valtteri Bottas putting in a 1:15.732 last Friday.
His time was set on Pirelli’s C5 tyres, the softest and fastest of the lot.
However, not all the drivers have ventured out on the C5s yet with Sainz predicting a mad dash come the final hour of Friday’s running.
That, though, doesn’t mean fans will get a true reflection of who is fastest in qualifying trim.
“Tomorrow we will definitely go for a fast lap,” the McLaren driver told GPBlog.
“Everyone will see what the car has by the end of the test days.
“So, in the end, we will see fast times tomorrow, but probably there will still be teams that don’t show everything.
“It is also possible that teams turn down engines.
“Eventually, all teams will probably ride the C4 or C5 tyre tomorrow, so we will see fast times tomorrow.”
