Carlos Sainz may only be starting the first year of his two McLaren stint but already the Spaniard is thinking long-term.
Last year McLaren announced that Sainz would join the team, partnering rookie driver Lando Norris in 2019.
It is set to be one of the more interesting line ups as the duo, both tipped as stars of the future, go head-to-head while trying to return McLaren to winning ways.
The Woking team, who finished sixth in last year’s championship following the switch to Renault engines, last won a grand prix back in 2012.
“I am in a two-year commitment with them,” Sainz told Motorsport Week.
“I want, as a driver, but also as a fan because I am a McLaren fan, to see the team going forward.
“So, if we manage to get a good first year and a good head start on how things are going to evolve I really think I can create a family out of McLaren and spend a few years there.
“That’s my target at the moment.
“I’m going there going year-by-year, but also thinking about trying to be one of the key factors helping McLaren go back to the top.
“Because of that I’m extremely motivated, I’m extremely looking forward to it.”
McLaren will take the covers off their 2019 car on February 14.
