“The unfair advantage” was a term coined by racer Mark Donohue. It means finding a new bit of tech, be it aero-, engine- or suspension-related, that allows you to dominate the racing competition — at least for a season or two, until the rules change again. The turbine-powered Lotus race car was one, as was Penske’s 1994 Indy 500 car. And so was Audi’s quattro all-wheel system, especially in the early ’80s when it was dominating the rally scene.
