Lewis Hamilton signed off on the 2018 Formula 1 qualifying season with his 11th pole position of the season, but the champion was pushed all the way by teammate Valtteri Bottas as Mercedes became the first team in the history of F1 to record five consecutive front row lockouts at the same venue.
The championship already in the can, Mercedes has nothing more to fight for — but fight they did and win another pole they did.
“It was quite an emotional qualifying session for me,” said Hamilton. “This is the last time I’m going to be qualifying in this car, and I know you guys watch it but the emotional rollercoaster that I’ve gone through with this car. I’m probably closer to this car than I have been with any car. I’m emotionally attached, and you know what, it’s not always been easy. It’s been a struggle with her but it’s been a real privilege to work with her this year and I’m just so grateful for the team, for everyone for putting it together.
“Today was so much fun. To go out there and just be able to express yourself and push the car the way you want, there’s no better feeling.”
